A Project Spanning 240 Years!

Hey makers!

I wanted to share a project I created with great thought as a gift for a friend’s birthday in February.

At the start of the new year, I spent a few days searching the Victoria and Albert Museum collection online for a design that would work well with an apron. My friend cooks and bakes daily for her family and always wears an apron, so I felt this was the right direction for my research.

I found an unknown maker design from the Prints, Drawings and Painting collection on the V&A website that looked like the perfect project for pockets.

Since this is the year to finally use up some of those leftover making supplies, I decided on a 100% linen that would work well with a 1920’s bias apron pattern.

I began with shaping the pockets and transferring the pattern to stitch, using a cotton backing for support.

The apron is approximately 98% hand-sewn, with the remaining 2% stitched by machine to attach the first side of the bias binding to the apron body.

I spent about a week working on it, then had to wait to post the package.

In all, this project spans about 240 years, from the 1780’s to 2025.
1780s – drawing
1920s – apron pattern
2025 – hand sewn

I can only hope that she wears it until the last of its fibers are gone and that it has been truly worn and loved.

Happy Birthday, Salena!
