#spin15in15 Spotlight Spinner: @randomgwen

This week’s spotlight is on, Gwen, @randomgwen:

Gwen

Q. Favorite fiber to spin?

Gwen: Anything relatively soft and with a nice (not too short) staple length, really!  I am experimenting with more different fibers lately but I cannot pick a favorite yet.

Q. Do you prefer worsted or woolen methods of spinning?

Gwen: I have not paid much attention to worsted or woolen methods to be honest.  I am just getting to the point that spinning is going well and that I want to take a closer look at what preparations of fiber and what methods of spinning give particular results.  no real answer for now!

Q.  Who or what inspires you?

Gwen:  The whole Instagram community is very inspiring and @keninmaine in particular.  He is a true spindle friend and I love to talk to him about spindles, fibers and anything spinning (or not spinning) related.  Hand spinning also brought up my love for wood and natural products.  I can really enjoy (and drool over) spindles that are made out of special woods and that the wood is used in such a way that it looks at its best.  It even went so far that when I see sheep in the countryside I imagine what it would be like to spin their fleeces! Call me crazy?  Maybe…

Q. Any future spinning goals?

Gwen: I would love to spin my own 3 or 4 ply sock yarn.

Q. Do you knit, weave, or gift/sell your handspun?

Gwen: To be honest, I have not yet used my handspun for any projects yet.  I have some plans for the handspun I already finished but no real big projects yet.  I really love how weaving looks, I might need to take a look into how that works sometime.

Q.  What has Instagram done for you in spinning?

Gwen:  I would not have started spinning without Instagram! I got inspired by the occasional spinning pics popping up in my feed.  These pictures inspired me to get my ver first spinning kit including a simple drop spindle and some fiber in different preparations.  The Instagram spinning community is great.  I love to see how everyone is spinning along every single day and it is nice to have some people to ask my silly beginner questions!

Q.  Without spinning, what might your other passions be?

Gwen: Sitting still is not for me, I feel like I am wasting time when I have nothing on my hands.  So to keep myself busy I crochet and knit.  I also love to write with people all over the world and I have plenty of other hobbies, you could call me a hobby hoarder!  I am always hungry for more new exciting stuff to try, and that drive is what led me to hand spinning.

If you haven’t seen much of Gwen’s work, go take a look on Instagram,@randomgwen

I want to thank Gwen for taking the time to answer these fiber-minded questions and for being part of the #spin15in15 movement on Instagram.

Until next time…
